It would be closer to the original with: "give them a shoulder (to cry on)..." and "the pain is not foreign/strange to you".

I don't think it's very false-it's ok!! only two things- why not "shoulder" like in the original?("give them a shoulder.."
-ok, hand is with similar meaning,not bad
about long-familiar-I suggest alien (..the pain is alien to you)...
